How to determine watch band sizes and choose the sizes of wristwatch PERFECTLY for men

It is impossible to deny the influence of modern technology such as smartphone which has been considered as an “inseparable thing” of modern men. However, wristwatches are still an accessory that has never been out-of-date and redundant for gentlemen. In this post, Babu will give you some tips on how to measure the watch band sizes concisely to help you confidently choose the watch with the size you are looking for.

Watch band or watch strap size is determined by the width of the band end that attaches to the watch. Watches come in many different sizes; therefore, the width of the watch strap can vary as well.

  1. Determine strap size

Handmade watch straps have a high precision; therefore, precisely determining the size of watch band can be done within seconds. Please note that 2 pieces of watch band are measured by the width of the strap end that attaches to your watch. The strap width is always measured in millimeters (mm).

Step 1: Determine strap width

  • Use seamstress tape, ruler or caliper to measure from the inside of the lugs of the strap.
  • Check your old watch band: Check the backside of your current strap to see if the size is clearly indicated.

The easiest way is to download the strap size measurement help guide. It will help you easily identify the precise size of your watch strap.

Step 2:  Determine the strap length/ your wrist size

  • Measure your wrist: You can measure the length around your wrist using seamstress tape. You should also remember that two piece straps can be adjusted smaller when buckled so it is okay if the strap length is somewhat longer than needed.
  • Use a piece of thread and wrap around your wrist, and then measure the length with a ruler.

The easiest way: You can check and measure the length of your current watch band without buckle.

  1. Choose the size of watch appropriately for your wrist
  2. Size of watch face

The watch face is one of the decisive factor that can affect to the aesthetics of the watch. Remember:

  • Watch face for men will vary from 38 to 46mm.
  • Above 46mm is too large, and below 36mm is too small.
  • You should base on your wrist size to choose an appropriate watch face size.

An interesting way to measure your wrist size is using US dollar around your wrist. The length of the notes is about 6 inches. If your wrist size is from 6 to 7 inches, you should choose a small or average sized watch face at 38mm, 40mm, or 42mm, or else you should consider a larger size of 44-46mm.

  1. The thickness of watch case

When mechanical watches were in their golden era, many people thought that the thinner the watch was, the better quality it was. Time has gone by; mechanical watches were gradually replaced with electronic watches, which means this viewpoint is not correct anymore. Therefore, you should buy a wristwatch with the thickness of the watch case proportionally to the size of the dial.

  • If the watch face’s size is 38-42mm, then the thickness of watch case will be about 7mm.
  • If the size is 44mm, then the thickness will be about 9mm.

Choose the right size of the dial will help you choose the appropriate thickness of watch case that is suitable for your wrist.

  1. The width of the straps

With a properly manufactured watch, the watch band will be half of the size of the dial. If your watch face’s size is 40mm, the watch band will be around 20mm. however, based on your style, you can adjust the size of the watch band a bit bigger or smaller than standard one.

  1. The material of the watch band

The watch band material also affects the appearance of the watch. If the watch band is made from leather, it will look slender and more elegant. Metal bracelets will look a little “bunker” and heavier despite the same size. So, if your wrist is small, remember this factor. Besides the size, you also need to take the decorative details on the dial into account. The details here may be numbers, watch hands, and side adjustment buttons.

If these details are large, then it will make your watch look a bit larger than it actually is. It means that it will be a bit unbalancing for small wrist person. Of course, being suitable or not depends on other factors such as wearer’s style, characteristics, and hobbies as well.
